Update from Superintendent Dr. Van Scoy Regarding Return to School Monday

June 5, 2022

Gananda Families,

Our training on trauma emphasizes the importance of returning to normal.  We want to return staff and students tomorrow but we need to make some adjustments to the day to make sure that we are able to support them.  Our efforts to support students will include reduced academic expectations.  As we return to school tomorrow, Monday, June 6, 2022, the following will be in place:

  1. All Gananda schools will start tomorrow on a 2-hour delay. Buses will be picking up students 2 hours behind their normal morning pick-up time; students can be dropped off to school 2 hours after their normal morning drop-off time. This is to allow us time to support our staff prior to our students arriving.
    • All students attending Private, Parochial and other out of district programs will continue as normal.
  2. All staff should report to school at their normal scheduled time. Information will be forthcoming from your building administration.
  3. Students will be dismissed from school at regular times. There will be no academic help period for secondary students from 2:20 to 3:00.
  4. For our families: From 9:30am to 10:30am the Gananda Middle School cafeteria will be available for middle school and high school parents after they drop off their students. The purpose of the time is to provide secondary families resources to support their students.  From 2:20pm to 3:00pm in the middle school cafeteria, the same support  will be available for Elementary parents.  The Wayne County Crisis Intervention Team will be available with Kelly VanLaeken, our chief academic officer and Tracie Douglas, retired Gananda MS principal.
  5. For our in District Students: Our middle school students will go to their 3rd period classes when they report.  Our high school students will report to their 1st period and there will be no morning Wayne Tech.
  6. All schools will have access to mental health support tomorrow.  The first two hours of the day will be spent providing support for staff and providing tools to support students.  Once students arrive, TIG representatives shift focus to providing support to students.  Targeted support will be provided to identified groups of students within specific circles of impact. If you believe that your student will need specific support, and you are concerned we have missed them, please call your building's office and leave information with the secretary.
  7. Law enforcement will be present at all buildings.
  8. Breakfast for students will be canceled because of the delayed start.
  9. 4th and 8th grade tests: There will be no state exams tomorrow, they will be moved to Thursday, June 9.

We recognize tomorrow will be challenging for our school community. We will get through this by supporting, listening, and working together. I am confident that we will overcome our recent challenges and I am committed to strengthening our mission to educate all students for success. We are GanandaProud.
